Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut
The kindest Cut theory are the functions and meaning in music video editing. She analysed editing in music video and Hollywood film.
In Music Videos she found that there are multiplicity and incomplete obscure paths. She also found that there is no typical order of the shots in music videos and the shots flow freely. Whereas in Hollywood film there are single clear paths and there are typical orders of shots. In some of these examples of music videos it shows that there is no specific order of shots and there is an incomplete path.
Examples of movies: Have a specific shot order and a clear single path.
Vernallis found discontinuity in music videos and they draw us from the narrative whereas Hollywood film there is continuity and the films tend to draw us in the narrative. Like in Jessie J's video it just focuses on the artist and draws us away from the narrative.
Sometimes Music videos have shown to create a negative images for the artist. The videos piece perfect women together in our minds and is demeaning for women.

Illustration Videos
- Illustration videos are where the shots cut on the beat. It also involves the lyrics matching with the shots that are being shown. Sometimes it just involves the artist performing with no narrative at all. Here are some examples: Jessie J example shows the artist is just performing. Carly Rae Jepsen shows a narrative of a girl wanting a guy to call her and the lyrics match with the shots. Also in the Pussycat Dolls video the video just focuses on the artists and their performance.
Amplification Videos
The video cuts on the beat but also off the beat to emphasise features. This type of video has a meaning to it and can involve performance. Sometimes the lyrics don't show the meaning of the video but the shots in the music video. In Bruno Mars' music video he is dragging a piano during most of the video. The piano symbolizes him taking all the weight off his 'lover's' shoulders. He takes this weight off and puts it on himself so that she does not have to worry anymore and can live her life without any problems. In the Maroon 5 song the meaning of the video is that one small decision can result into a mistake with severe consequences.
Disjuncture Videos
Disjuncture music videos are where the lyrics do not relate to the music video whatsoever. The music video 'does not make sense'. In Fall Out Boy's music video it doesn't make sense why there are monkeys in the music video and why they smash up the stage at the end of the video. The music video doesn't seem to have any meaning. In Storm Queen's music video the lyrics do not relate to what is on the screen and the video just doesn't make sense

Rock Video Analysis
The special effects of the artist underwater with jellyfish shows to us that this is quite conventional video for rock music as the narrative is difficult to understand and in some cases doesn't really make sense.
There are quick cuts of the band playing with their instruments which is common for a rock music video.
There are close ups of the artist so we can identify the artist of the music video. There is also low key lighting which is common for a music video of rock.
There is fast paced editing showing aggressive behaviour and then suddenly their faces look evil. We associate evil with
